Accessibility

Built against WCAG 2.2 Level AA.

What we have done, what we know is still short, and how to tell us if something does not work for you.

Our commitment

01

Built against WCAG 2.2 Level AA, with one deviation we state plainly.

This website is designed and built against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 at Level AA, which is the standard referenced by the European Accessibility Act and EN 301 549, and by Section 508 in the United States. It meets that standard on every criterion but one, and we name the exception below rather than claim full conformance.

We tested it rather than assumed it. Every text and background pair on the site was measured for contrast before publication.

What we have done

02

Structure

Semantic and navigable

One main heading per page, headings in order, a main landmark, and a skip link to bypass the navigation. The site works from the keyboard alone.

Contrast

Measured, not estimated

Body text on the page ground measures 17.5 to 1 against a required 4.5. The lowest text pair on the site measures 4.6.

Focus and motion

Visible and respectful

A visible focus indicator on every interactive element, meeting the 3 to 1 requirement added in WCAG 2.2. Animation is disabled for anyone who has asked their system to reduce motion.

Images

Described

Every image carries alternative text, and each says plainly that the photograph is a library image rather than a Bbabsal site.

Text

Scales with the page

The page is presented at a single fixed width and scaled by the browser to fit the screen, so type keeps its proportion to everything around it. Browser and system zoom both work, and no content is hidden or truncated at any size.

Independence

No third parties

Fonts are served from our own server. No overlay, widget or accessibility plugin is used, because those tend to make things worse.

Known limitations

03

We would rather list these than claim they do not exist.

  • The page is served at one fixed width and scaled by the browser rather than reflowing into a narrow single column layout. This is a deliberate choice, so that the site reads the same on every device, and it is a departure from success criterion 1.4.10 Reflow. Nothing is hidden or cut off, and no horizontal scrolling is required to read a line of text, but we would rather name it than let the conformance claim stand unqualified
  • Charts and diagrams carry a text description and a caption, but the underlying figures are not yet offered as a downloadable table
  • The site has not yet been tested by users of assistive technology. It has been tested against the guidelines, which is not the same thing
  • No formal third party accessibility audit has been commissioned

Tell us

04

If any part of this site is difficult for you to use, write and say so. Tell us the page and what happened, and we will fix it and reply.
